ON THE CORNER OF THE YARKON (STREET)
In the streets of Tel Aviv, near the sea She was born She grubed the dust-bins like a cat, Alone And that is this way that life passes besides her Almost without noticing her. During long winters, she sat down on the beach, She wrapped her body in pieces of dreams Until she gets hurt And her tired body didn't stop praying for springtime To come at last.
In a corner of Yarkon street The street lamps still talk to us Of this same quarter Of this girl...
The drunkards and the old men caged her hands Close to their bodies And tear her white skin Until she bled On dark nights, she was like a lantern, Alone, orphan
In a corner of Yarkon street...
In the streets of Tel Aviv, stars still fall Without a noise And the night caresses with its hands The deserted town She stayed in a corner, holding a cat On her breast
In a corner of Yarkon street...
