CHAKI LI, SALONIKI

Od gvul echad, od netach zman
chaki li, saloniki
ravah ha-derech le-yavan,
chaki li, saloniki.

Shotet ha-lev, kafu'a hadam
ba-sheleg shel germaniah,
kulam kulam avdu li sham
ba-lager be-polania.

Chiverei panim, s'ridei chaim
plitei mas'a ha-mavet,
blou'i tal'im, hineh ba'im
livkot bi-r'chovotaich.

Ha-chofesh ba, aviv chadash
karov ani elaich
k'tzel dahu'i be-guf chalash
avo bi-she'araich.

(there are at this point lyrics in Greek:
"Thessaloniki mou glykia...")

Od gvul echad, od netach zman
chaki li, saloniki
ravah ha-derech le-yavan,
chaki li, saloniki.

WAIT FOR ME, SALONIKI

One more border, one more eternity of time,
Wait for me, Saloniki.
Long is the road to Greece,
Wait for me, Saloniki.

The heart wanders, the blood congeals
In the German snow;
All of them, all of them, I lost them there,
In the Polish death camp.

Ashen faces, remnants of life,
Survivors of the death march:
Worn and patched, here they’ve come,
To cry in your streets.

Freedom has come, a new spring,
I am close to you (Saloniki).
Like the faded shadow of a worn out body,
I have come to your gates.

(there are at this point lyrics in Greek,
"My sweet Thessaloniki...")

One more border, one more eternity of time,
Wait for me, Saloniki.
Long is the road to Greece,
Wait for me, Saloniki.

Note:
4,000 Jews were transported from Thessaloniki (Saloniki) to the death camps in Germany and Poland, among them family members of Yehuda Poliker, who is the son of Greek Jewish holocaust survivors. This is his tribute to the family he lost, and all the Jews of Saloniki, a "place and a name" (yad va-shem) to honor their memories.
