NOSTALGIC SONGS OF ISRAEL POSTED ON INTERNET
BY JEWISH
NATIONAL AND UNIVERSITY LIBRARY
FOR ISRAEL'S INDEPENDENCE DAY

Jerusalem, May 1, 2003 – “Songs we loved to hear” is the name of a selection of old favorite Israeli songs that have been posted on the Internet in connection with Israel Independence Day (May 7) by the National Sound Archives at the Jewish National and University Library of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

The nostalgic melodies can be heard by logging on to the library’s Internet site: http://jnul.huji.ac.il

The songs, most of which were written before Israel’s independence, include those dealing with the building of the state-to-be and immigration, as well as songs about love and work and songs for children. One of the most durable of the old favorites that can be heard is “Kalaniyot” by Shoshana Damari. The recordings have been posted without any acoustical improvements in order to maintain their original spirit.

The recordings are part of the David and Fela Shapell Digitization Project at the library, which is making rare library material accessible to the general public.

The National Sound Archives preserves thousands of recordings that reflect the Jewish and Israeli heritage, going back to the early part of the last century.
